Ysaÿe requested a violin concerto from Chausson. In a correspondence to Ysaÿe, Chausson refused the request. He wrote: “I don’t see how I could be thinking of a concerto, which is a big thing, difficult as hell, and so delicate to write. But…a single piece for “violin and orchestra,” this is more possible. I’ve thought about it before. It will be a piece with a very free form, with numerous passages where the violin plays alone.
