Chausson and Ysaÿe traveled to Barcelona to attend a festival celebrating French music at the invitation of Crickboom, then the director of the Academy of Music and the Catalan Concert Society. The first reading of Poème was given during this trip at the home of Catalan painter Santiago Rusiñol, performed by Ysaÿe and Jeanne Escudier, Chausson’s wife.
